The Yugoslavian Zastava Arms M57 pistol was adopted into the Yugoslavian Army in 1957 as the standard side arm. The M57 is a Yugoslavian variant of the iconic Soviet Russian TT33 Tokarev, and was licensed by the Yugoslavians to be copied. The Zastava Arms version has a longer grip since a 9 round magazine was produced instead of the 8 rounds of the TT33 Tokarev.

All M57 pistols are with the Yugoslavian emblem crest on the upper part of the slider. The emblem of Yugoslavia featured six torches, surrounded by wheat with a red star at its top as other Soviet satellite countries, and burning together in one flame which represented the brotherhood and unity of the six federal republics forming Yugoslavia: Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Slovenia.
